Pigmented Lesions

Just about everyone has a pigmented lesion of some sort or other. Some are cute, like a dusting of freckles across the bridge of the nose. Others we don't like so much, like age spots, liver spots, scars, hemangiomas, nevis, moles or actinic keratoses. And let's not forget the leathered weathering from years of sun damage.

Pigments are coloured compounds in the skin. They absorb light more than the lighter surrounding skin according to the same principle that makes a black shirt hotter on a sunny day than a white shirt. Our treatments use light either in the form of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or laser. The applied light is absorbed by the pigment, causing the pigment to break down. The body's own waste disposal system removes the break down products over time. The spot gradually fades away.

Studies have shown that a single treatment produces about a 2-year reduction in perceived age due to the improvement of the texture and evening of colour of the skin. Typically a treatment series is 5 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart. Follow-up treatments in later years are recommended to ensure the ongoing benefits as you age. Many patients like the gradual nature of IPL treatments. They require little or no downtime. Your skin just looks better and better over time.
